Socialism International is a biannual conference organized by Parti Sosialis Malaysia since 2005. These conferences have been an important platform to analyze international politics, imperialism, capitalism, worker struggles, climate change, gender and many more from a Marxist perspective. Our participants are usually activists, academics, unionist, students, grassroots activist politicians, researchers and basically anyone seeking an alternative to the oppressive capitalist system. We pleased to announce that this year 2023, Socialism International Conference 2023 will be held on 2nd and 3rd December, 2023. Siti Rahayu Baharin,

Siti Rahayu Baharin, best known as Cikgu Rahayu, is the vice president of Parti MUDA. An educator and politician, she was a teacher for 15 years before joining politics. She is the founder of Buku Jalanan Chow Kit, an NGO that serves as an education and resource centre for the children of the Chow Kit area. She contested in PRU15 in the Tanjung Karang constituency. Her main areas of interest are the rights of children and education access.

S. Arutchelvan

S. Arutchelvan is a founding member of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) currently serving as Deputy Chairperson. Prior to that, he was Secretary-General. He worked at Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM), a leading human rights NGO, for over a decade from 1995 to 2006. He was local councillor for the Semenyih constituency for five years from 2008 to 2013. In addition, he has been active with grassroots organising and progressive movements including those focused on student welfare, workers' rights, Orang Asli, and the Movement to Abolish ISA.

Dr. Bridget Welsh

Dr. Bridget Welsh is an Honorary Research Associate with the University of Nottingham Asia Research Institute Malaysia based in Kuala Lumpur. She specializes in Southeast Asian politics, with a focus on Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Indonesia. She is involved in various projects that reflect a keen interest in democracy and development in Southeast Asia. Her experiences travelling and living across three continents have informed her primary commitments to fostering engagement, mutual understanding, and empowerment. She is often on the road conducting fieldwork in Southeast Asia.

Prof. Prabhat Patnaik

Prof. Prabhat Patnaik is an eminent Marxist economist and political commentator from India. A staunch critic of neoliberal economic policies, he holds a PhD from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He is an Emeritus Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, where he taught from 1974 to 2010. From June 2006 to May 2011, he served as vice-chairman of the Kerala State Planning Board. He has authored several books, including "Accumulation and Stability under Capitalism," "Time, Inflation, and Growth," "Macroeconomics," "Economics and Egalitarianism," and most recently, "The Value of Money."

Towards a Feminist Socialist Alternative?

Yee Shan

Chong Yee Shan is the chief of Bureau Communication of Parti Sosialis Malaysia. She is LGBT person and SOGIE activist in Malaysia. Founding member of Diversity Malaysia, a CSO working on LGBTIQ right in Malaysia. Currently she is also Industrial Relation Officer of National Government Hospital Cleaner Union. She has been actively fighting for the rights of the marginalised across races and genders for more than a decade.

Angela Carr

Angela Carr, member of Socialist Alliance who works as a Social and Community Services worker, she is a committed trade unionist and is active as a delegate.

Ongoo Buyanjargal

Ongoo Buyanjargal, trade union organizer, Die.LINKE member and member of the party's executive committee in Berlin since May 2023. As a trade union organizer Ongoo supports employees in organising their power and winning better working conditions and higher wages. As member of the party's executive committee in Berlin Ongoo focuses on social movements and issues around migration.

Dr Michael Jeyakumar

Dr Michael Jeyakumar is the chairperson of Parti Sosialis Malaysia. He served as a Member of Parliament for the Sungai Siput constituency from 2008 to 2018, during which time he was selected among the top three Parliament members by the Speaker of the Dewan for prioritizing healthy discussions and focusing on the priorities and interests of society. He has received awards for his work as a caring doctor from the MMA. He played a key role in the Coalition against Healthcare Privatization and accepted the Human Rights Award from SUARAM on their behalf in 2007. Additionally, he rejected a promotion offered by the Sultan in 1998.

Prof Venkatesh Athreya

Prof Venkatesh Athreya, a chemical engineer-turned-development economist, served as a Professor of Economics at Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu, for close to three decades. He coordinated mass literacy campaigns in the 1990s and has been involved in social mobilization campaigns for gender equality and against female infanticide and feticide. He was the lead author of "The Report on the State of Food Insecurity in Rural India" (2008) and "The Report on the State of Food Insecurity in Urban India" (2010). He has written extensively on issues of agrarian change, literacy, gender, infanticide, food security, human development, and political economy.

Michael Pröbsting

Michael Pröbsting is a socialist activist and writer residing in Austria. He has published numerous writings in several languages, including 'Rosa Luxemburg: ‘Ich bin ein Land der unbeschränkten Möglichkeiten’' (1999), 'The Credit Crunch: A Marxist Analysis' (2008), and 'Cuba’s Revolution Sold Out?' (2013). His extensive work on China's transformation into an imperialist power is covered in his book 'The Great Robbery of the South' (2013). Choo Chon Kai

Choo Chon Kai was involved in student activism during his campus days at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and was suspended for a semester by USM for protesting against the Internal Security Act (ISA). He previously worked with the human rights organization SUARAM as its Penang Coordinator from 2002 to 2007. He was also one of the six PSM members detained under the Emergency Ordinance (EO) in 2011. He is currently the coordinator for the International Bureau of PSM and the editor for Sosialis.net.

Sarah Hathway

Sarah Hathway is a social worker and worked as a union organiser in the health sector who has been recently elected as a local councillor in the City of Greater Geelong for the Socialist Alliance.

Teody Navea is the chairperson of a labor group called BMP Cebu and is a member of the PLM National Advisory Council and the PLM International Solidarity Committee.

Green Washing & Climate Change

Prof. Darren Ong Chung Lee

Prof. Darren Ong Chung Lee is chairperson of Parti Sosialis Malaysia's Dengkil branch. He is also the editor of Thinkleft.net, PSM’s English language blog. Prof. Darren is a professor of Xiamen University Malaysia who has published research articles in mathematics and physics. He was formerly chair of Parti Sosialis Malaysia's Bureau of Environment and Climate Crisis. As chair, he engaged in environmental activism, being a part of the Pertahankan HSKLU coalition that successfully opposed efforts of the Selangor state government to degazette the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve.

Arnout Hoekstra

Arnout Hoekstra is the General Secretary of the Socialist Party since 2019. Before that he was the Lead Candidate for the SP during the elections for the European Parliament and an alderman in the city of Vlaardingen for 8 years.

Sam Wainwright

Sam Wainwright is a National Co-convenor of Socialist Alliance living in Boorloo/Perth Western Australia. A former elected councillor in Fremantle (2009-2021), he has been active in campaigns for refugee rights and for human rights in Sri Lanka. He is currently active in the climate movement and Unionists for Palestine.

Democracy in Crisis: Thailand

Giles Ji Ungpakorn

Giles Ji Ungpakorn is a Thai-British academic and Marxist political activist. He was associate professor in the Faculty of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University before fleeing to the United Kingdom in 2009 after facing a lèse majesté charge in Thailand. He joined as a member of Kon Thai UK, a Red Shirt organization in the UK. His English language book, "Thailand's Crisis and the Fight for Democracy," published in early 2010, aimed to explain the situation in Thailand before the Red Shirt demonstrations and clashes with the military in April and May 2010. Warunyu Kajorncheeppunngam

Warunyu Kajorncheeppunngam is a member of Socialist Workers Thailand and also a member of the Creative Workers Union of Thailand. He has been working as a book translator since 2020. He started his political activities within Workers’ Union, organized by young workers and activists in 2021. He is currently building a network amongst book translators and writers within the Creative Workers Union of Thailand.
